***DISCLAIMER READ THE COMMENT BELOW*** The intent of this response is not to assign blame either to the athlete or the track designers. It was to voice my concerns over the fact that there were rumors of parts of the Luge competition being cancelled. Also, there were concerns voiced over the status of the Luge event in the Olympics as a whole. My point was that I didn't want to see the other athletes in this event having to forfeit their chance at representing their respective countries in the Olympic games as a result of public backlash against the perceived safety of the sport. As someone who devoted 7 years of my life to this sport, both as an athlete and coach, I can appreciate how hard these guys worked to get where they are. Don't let them pay for this accident with their Olympic experience. If you feel the need to pay tribute to this young man then please do so. However don't let this cast a black mark on the event itself and the athletes competing in it. |
