| 10/16/2011 - Las Vegas Motor Speedway In a horrific 15 car crash on lap 11, Dan Wheldon was injured and later passed away at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Wheldon's car became airborne and then unfortunately hit the Catch Fence cockpit side first. The car then burst into flames. The remaining drivers honored him with a five car tribute lap later in the day. Dan was the winner of this year's Indianapolis 500. It was his second Indy 500 win. It was the last race of the Izod Indy Series this year and Dan was competing for the championship. Dan, born in Emberton, Olney, England, United Kingdom June 22, 1978, Passed away October 12, 2011 aged 33 years. He Leaves behind a wife Susie and 2 children, Sebastian and Oliver.
