During my brief stay there, I made three close friendships, but Raymond was my best friend. He was very handsome, like a movie star, and was in great physical shape. He was always surrounded by the prettiest girls...a trait that made me jealous at times. Ray was very athletic, and enjoyed playing tennis... so much so that he also gave lessons. We met at L.A. City College during my freshman year. A love of music was one of the things we had in common, and soon we bonded over a mutual admiration of (as unlikely as it seems) Johnny Mathis. We hung out together often, doing all the typical "guy stuff." We went to the movies, sampled different restaurants and bars, and even took the occasional road trip to party in different cities. But during our entire friendship, he always had another group of friends that I would never meet. I never understood this. Then one night, I learned the reason why. It was because of a conversation we once had concerning Gay Rights. It was now 1996, and I was getting ready to move to Seattle, Washington. Ray called to wish me well, but he was upset. When I asked him what was wrong, he brought up the topic of our previous conversation. Then he confessed to me that he was gay. And how much it hurt to hear my opinions. Somehow Ray got the impression after that discussion that I wasn't very supportive of his lifestyle. Nothing could be further from the truth. We lost contact once I moved to Seattle. And it always bothered me that I didn't say or do enough to tell him that his being gay never bothered me... and that he was always one of my best friends. This song isn't intended to be political. It's not about being "for or against" homosexuality. It is simply a song based on the experiences of a heterosexual person who discovered that his best friend is gay. Ray... this song is for you. LYRICS: Boys Don't Cry =========== Last time you saw me It was raining all day Unusual for May But so are your ways I saw those tears falling Down from your eyes You couldn't disguise As you turned away Oh what's on your mind Tell me no lies There's no goodbye Without saying why Then with a sigh A revelation unwinds What a surprise Then you told me you were so afraid But the way I feel about you is unswayed Don't you ever forget that Boys don't cry Remember what I told you that Boys don't cry Let me wipe your tears away Boys don't cry I said Please don't forget that (As I 'm trying to hide my tears) Boys don't cry I ask myself then what this world is about So what makes you wrong And what makes it right How cruel has this world been to you I'll never know but this much is
